Wanna Race?

I would like to tell you about an observation I have made about boys. This is not profound.

They like to race.

It seems that everywhere we go, Hudson always has to be 1st. Up 6 flights of stairs...he sprints. Down the hill...he races. Wal-Mart....has to be first through the door. One of my favorite pics of Hudson is this one from last January at the San Diego Zoo. He is unhappy becasue his Uncle Phil beat him through the exit at the zoo, after a day of Hudson racing him everywhere I am sure, this is what he looked like.

The funny thing is watching him with his sister. If she beats him to a point, he keeps running and proclaims they weren't racing to the first location but his newly determined location and he got their first, so he wins. One of my favorite happened today. We all arrived downstairs on the bike. The kids grabbed all their stuff, and headed upstairs. I pulled the electric bike inside our stairwell, maneuvered it through the other bikes, chained it up, locked it up, grabbed the rest of the belongings out of the bike and finally headed upstairs. I was greeted with "Mom, you really lost bad!" Thanks. (Good thing I am not competitive, so this doesn't bother me)

The funniest part about this is you can say, "Oh, he's an 8 yr. old boy, very natural to run and race EVERYWHERE he goes". So, what about my 34 yr. old boy?

You see, on Thursday morning, we were taking the kids (all 4 of them) to school. I had 2 on my bike, Rob had 2 on his. He has the more powerful bike, so whoever is on his bike "wins". (becasue life is a race). Hudson, every day wants to ride with Rob. He tells me it isn't that he doesn't like to ride with me, but dad's bike is better. On this particular morning, I had Hudson and AB on my bike, Rob with Hannah and KT. We took off and at the first intersection made the green light, Rob getting stuck at the red. We go on to school, and upon arrival realize Rob and his crew were already there. My one day to win, redeem myself in my son's eyes, actually BEAT the faster bike. You might ask, how did Rob get there so fast if he got stuck at the red light? Oh...that's becasue he drove on the opposite side of the rode into oncoming traffic to be on the school's side of the road.....SO HE COULD WIN!!!!! (I included this last part so his momma and daddy will scold him for driving into oncoming traffic with a grandbaby)

Maybe your household is different? Is is just my boy(s) who like to race everywhere? I remember my mom constantly telling my brothers "Life is not a race". And I am pretty sure at least one of my brothers, if not both has a running tally of who has won more HORSE or one on one games. I guess....boys will be boys!

What a great observation and soooooo true with all my boys! Maybe it is genetic!

And let me be the first one to "get on to" Rob. (wagging my finger and tsk-tsking) :)

Don't wory - my husband and son are the exact same way! Everything's a race. This year there are 14 boys in Michael's kindergarten class and he's become even more competitive at home. Unfortunately, I've learned from his dad that it never ends! - Laura

Rob, Rob, Rob!!!! If you hurt my beautiful, precious Hannah, (or Hudson)???? Not to mention yourself-you're pretty precious to me also! I'm sure glad Alicia has some sense! I'm also glad that you put your memoirs in writing, so we will have something to remember you by!!!

My dear son, do you not remember your mother's teaching, "God doesn't always choose to protect us from our own stupidity", and "Winning isn't everything". Them is words to live by. Just a friendly reminder. Honor your mother and father by taking care of those sweet "babies" of mine. Thanks for "snitch'n" Alicia. Lovingly your mother.

Yep, happens at my house too. It used to be a race to the car to see who sits in the front seat.

Youth pastor...racing teens, gotta be a connection.

Hey Sister, This is brother...the good uncle one... just wanted you to know I'm reading your blogs now, and had a great time with you last week! It always goes so fast! I am glad though that Father gave us an extra day together! Having trouble processing everything today and getting back into the swing of things, so please be thinking of me...

Don't you remember how many times Dad and I raced home from church with different kids in our respective cars to see who "won" by getting there first. So, I am not sure it is just boys but maybe the competitive nature of our families that tempted us to put our kids' lives in danger just to "win the race." Hope all your races stay on foot and not on motor bikes. Do as I say...not as I did!
